Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?
I've taught in a range of educational settings (state secondary, independent secondary, and pupil referral unit) until I retired from the classroom at 60 in April 2022. Concurrently, I've developed a writing career and wrote regularly for Tes (formerly known as the Times Educational Supplement) for a number of years, including a monthly column.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
I work from home, writing non-fiction (articles / reviews) and fiction (short stories or novels). I also offer 1-2-1 tutoring to writing students.
What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?
Teaching career - seeing pupils progress and learn to love English when they didn't before. Writing career - publishing my teacher-memoir and soon my first full-length novel, Cuckoo in the Nest, being published in March 2023.
How would you say your 水果派AVexperience has helped you to get where you are today?
My PGCE year as a mature student was stressful but I learned so much from my tutors about fostering a love of English. I particularly loved the linguistics sessions and carried this through to teaching A Level English Language - huge fun.
Why did you choose to study at 水果派AVand why would you recommend 水果派AVto others?
For me, it was location, as I was a mature student with three children at home. My studies at 水果派AVwere a long time ago but the PGCE offered then was a sure foundation and the tutors were incredibly supportive and knowledgeable.
What is your best memory of studying here?
The lectures on different aspects of English teaching, particularly linguistics.
If you could give one piece of advice to current 水果派AVstudents, what would that be?
Take every opportunity to learn from the PGCE tutors while you can. You're very soon in the classroom and you need that strong foundation!
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
Stay in touch with your peers for encouragement, guidance and support. You'll need them.
